金庸小说中的黄药师行事洒脱不羁，自认为是个至情至性之人，还称：“生平最恨的是仁义礼法，最恶的是圣贤节烈。”但他的所作所为处处说明，他其实是一个欺世盗名的伪君子。
第一次华山论剑之后，周伯通携带《九阴真经》下卷去藏匿地点时，遇到了黄药师和他的妻子。为了得到经书，黄药师用计骗周伯通，说经书是假的，气得周伯通毁去经书，但黄药师私下里又让看过经书的妻子凭借过目不忘的本领将经书内容默写下来。后来，周伯通发现自己上当了，去找黄药师理论，黄药师还强词夺理：“我看过的《九阴真经》是内人笔录的，可不是你的经书。”敢做不敢当，黄药师哪里有一点儿君子作风？
而后为了逼周伯通交出《九阴真经》上卷，他又把周伯通的双腿打断，一关就是15年，还美其名曰“要（把经书）火化了祭他的夫人”。黄药师拿到经书后，真的会一眼不看就焚化吗？不会。实际上，黄药师的妻子之所以会去世，正是因为他太过重视经书。
黄药师得到经书下卷后回到桃花岛，却不想经书被弟子梅超风盗走。黄药师迁怒于其他无辜的弟子，将他们挑断脚筋并赶出师门。当时身怀六甲的妻子为了安慰黄药师，不顾身体虚弱，再次默写经文，这直接导致她油尽灯枯，生下黄蓉后就去世了。以黄药师的医道，他应该很清楚这样耗神费力对孕妇有多危险，但他默许妻子这样做，说明在他的心中，经书比妻子的命更重要。
妻子去世后，黄药师又念起自己与妻子的情谊，打算“以死相殉”，于是请能工巧匠打造了一艘极为华丽的漏水花船，准备带上妻子的遗体驾船驶向大海，当波涌舟碎之际，他就用玉箫吹奏《碧海潮生曲》，与妻子一起葬身万丈洪涛之中。
这样的殉情方式当真浪漫又深情。但黄药师一直没有出海，最初他声称舍不得尚在襁褓的黄蓉，要等她长大嫁人才安心；可黄蓉嫁给郭靖后，黄药师再也未提及殉情之事，而且他还意气风发地参加了第三次华山论剑。
那艘美丽的花船在黄药师年复一年的修葺中依然崭新如初，但就像他对妻子的感情一样华而不实。这与杨过16年后毅然纵身跃入绝情谷底的殉情相比，谁更至情率性，高下立判。
后来，欧阳锋替儿子欧阳克向黄药师求亲，黄药师明知黄蓉与郭靖才是两情相悦，但拿到信后，黄药师首先想的是：“当世武功可与自己比肩的只寥寥数人而已，其中之一就是欧阳锋了，两家算得上门当户对。眼见来书辞卑意诚，看了心下欢喜。”黄药师生平不是最恨俗世礼法吗？为了自己的面子，他却把“门当户对”置于女儿的幸福之上，这种做法真自私。
不过这也难怪，黄药师武艺高强，向来不受别人拘束，难免事事以自我为中心。在自己的利益面前，武林同道、徒弟甚至是亲人的利益都要为自己让路。只是，他不愿意当一个真小人，才处处粉饰自己的行为，倒成了一个标准的伪君子。
