（四）文身的社会功能
“文化是由人类求生存而创造出来的。每一种文化元素的产生都是为了满足人类的需要。今天的任何一种文化元素，都有社会中具有一定的功能，否则它就不会存在。”（11）因此，海南黎族文身的存在，有何社会功能呢？首先，文身习俗与古人的图腾崇拜有着密切的关系，它具有表现图腾崇拜的功能。。“图腾民族的身体装饰多有模仿图腾的习惯，或则黥纹涂色，或则毁齿结发，将身体全部或一部分扮似图腾动物的外形。”（12）这种模仿图腾装饰身体的做法，被称之为“图腾人体装饰”。其目的是“把人体装扮成图腾模样，也就是人们为了使图腾能够认识自己、保护自己而实行的‘图腾同体化’。”（13）其次，文身还有表明身份等级的功能。海南的黎族某些支系“豪商文多，贫贱文少，但看文字多少，以别贵贱。”（14）有些支系并非所有的女子都可以文身，尤其是奴婢身份的人是没有文身资格的。“海南黎女，以绣面为饰。……唯其婢不绣”。（15）三，文身有意味成年之功能。第四，文身还有自我保护之功能。
