China’s Tianhe-1 has a computing speed of 2,507 trillion(万亿)calculations a second, making it the fastest computer in the world. It is also 40 percent faster than the world’s second fastest supercomputer, Cray XT5 Jaguar, in the US, kept at a national laboratory in Tennessee, according to the New York Times. Jack Dongarra, a University of Tennessee computer scientist, told NYT that the Chinese supercomputer is faster than the existing Number One machine.Building the fastest supercomputer has become a source of national pride, as these machines are valued for their ability to solve problems in areas like defense, energy and science. These problems are related to national interests. Supercomputing technology is also found in business. Oil and gas companies use supercomputers to find oil and gas. Obviously, research centers with large supercomputers attract top scientific talents. This adds extra importance to the machines―they’re more than just huge computers. China’s new supercomputer will be used to speed up greatly scientific calculations, such as hurricane and tsunami modeling, cancer research, car design and even studying stars. In 2008, two US scientists put together a step-by-step guide on how to build a supercomputer using PlayStation 3 video-game consoles(控制台). Modern supercomputers are built by combining thousands of small computer servers(服务器)and using software to turn them into one large computer. Really, any organization with enough material and technology can create a fast machine. The Chinese system follows that model by linking thousands upon thousands of computer servers. But the secret behind the system―and the technological achievement―is China’s own networking technology. “That technology was built by them,” Dongarra said. “They are taking supercomputing very seriously and using a lot of time and money.”“China is still a developing country,” said Sha Chaoqun, manager at Dawning Company which is the leading supercomputer maker in China. “Maybe one day, China’s total computing power can be greater than that of the US, but there is still a long way to go before we get there.”Paragraph outlineSupporting detailsChina has

It’s the third time I’ve been here. The second is better than the first. She was (the) third in the exam. 如:He came first. I’ll have to finish my homework first. A second student stood up. I want to read the book a third time. I like the third girl. (至少有三个女孩供选择,特指)I saw a third girl.

Advertisements are an important part of our lives. We are so used to them that we often do not even realize how many we see and hear in a day!
What is an advertisement?
An advertisement provides information and uses creative languages and attractive pictures to encourage people to buy a product or service or believe in an idea. Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radios and televisions are the most places to find advertisements. There are two main types of advertisementsDcommercial advertisements and public service advertisements (PSAs). A commercial advertisement is one which someone has paid for to promote () a product or service. PSAs are often placed for free, and are used to educate people about health, safety, or any other issue which affects public welfare().
Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth?
China has strong laws to protect people from advertisements that lie or try to make people believe untrue promises about products or services. However, we still must be careful with the methods() used in advertisements to try and sell us things. Even if an ad does not lie, it does not mean it tells you the complete truth. One toothpaste ad says 'Bright-teeth fights bad breath!' The advertisers want you to read the word 'fights' and think that the toothpaste cures bad breath, but it does not say that! All it says is that it fights it and that is not the same thing at all. One supermarket tells buyers, 'You are proud of your cooking, so shouldn't you buy the freshest food?' This one is very clever, because it tells buyers that they are good cooks. However, the ad never says that this supermarket has the freshest food! They just hope that you read the ad, you will feel good about what it says and remember the words 'freshest food' and then buy it in the supermarket. We must not fall for this kind of trick!
Public service advertisements
Not all ads play tricks on us though. PSAs use some of the same methods, but they are made to serve the public. PSAs are meant to teach us and help us lead better lives. You have probably seen or heard some of them yourself, like 'Yes to life, no to drugs' and 'Knowledge changes life'. These ads deal with large social issues. There are also PSAs that educate people about public service projects, such as Project Hope. All of these ads are meant to be helpful, and you can often learn a lot by following the advice they give.
Try to remember: think about why you should do or buy the things the ad suggests. We all want to be smart about what we believe, so be smart about advertisements

①Bill Bowell, was suffering from depression. The doctor gave him some medicine, but it didn’t help, and he was unable to work for twelve years. Then he decided to swim with dolphins. “My life has changed,” says Bowell, “A dolphin named Simo looked into my eyes for a few minutes and I started to cry. All my strong feelings came out suddenly like a volcano. As I cried, Simo put his head on my chest and kept very quiet.” After swimming with dolphins, Bowell says he has completely got well.
②In France, a man had to move to a new job two hundred kilometers away. He had a dog and a cat, and he loved them both. But he thought that the cat would prefer to stay in the same house with the new owners. So he moved and took only the dog. About three weeks later, the dog was suddenly lost, for several days. The man looked for his dog, but didn’t find him. Then, seven weeks later, the dog came back but he was not alone. By his side was the cat. They were tired and hungry after their long trip, and there was something wrong with the cat’s paws. But they got well quickly and were never separated again.
③People say that fish are cold, but this story shows that they have feelings, too. A friend was moving to another country, so I took her pet goldfish and put it in a bowl with our goldfish. They lived together for six months, and when the friend came back, we separated them again, and she took her goldfish home. I found that my goldfish was acting strangely, hitting against the side of the bowl. The next morning he was dead. Later that day, my friend phoned to say that her goldfish was also dead, I believe they died of a broken heart.
