Finnish mobile game developer Seriously Digital Entertainment Inc. on Tuesday unveiled the first in a trilogy of animated games that it hopes will be spun into a broader entertainment franchise and challenge rivals like Angry Bird-maker Rovio Entertainment Ltd. and Clash of Clans-creator Supercell Oy.
Seriously, founded by two former Rovio executives last August, plans to roll out its first mobile gaming venture, Best Fiends, in October, co-founder Petri J&rvilehto and Andrew Stalbow said in an interview.
The game allows players to collect and evolve characters living in the world of Minutia where they fight against the voracious slugs of Mount Boom. The characters share a resemblance with those of Angry Birds but include a greater variety of creatures like ladybugs and butterflies that will grow increasingly fierce as players unlock their special powers. How well one does is partly based on the player’s strategic ability to choose the best team and the right combination of characters.
The executives hope the game will set the stage for an expansion into other lucrative entertainment industries, like movies, TV shows and traditional consoles gaming.
“We believe the next generation of entertainment brands will be built first on mobile, and we want to be at the forefront of that shift,” Mr. Stalbow, chief executive, said.
He has some previous experience. At Rovio, which derived about half of its $216 million revenue in 2013 from its merchandise and licensing business, Mr. Stalbow orchestrated strategic partnerships, inking deals withHasbroand Lucasfilm, and overseeing the advent of an Angry Birds cartoon series.
Mr. Stalbow said audiences are shifting away from traditional to mobile platforms at a ”much quicker pace than anybody in the industry ever expected.”
According to analytics firm Flurry, the average American consumer spends two hours and 42 minutes a day on a mobile device, of which close to an hour is spent on gaming apps.
Successful games today have the potential to reach 100 million people every single day, “a level of reach that has never really existed anywhere” previously, Mr. J&rvilehto said.
“The size of the prize if we can get this right is very big,” Mr. Stalbow said. He declined to give any financial projections.
In May, the company, which has offices both in Helsinki and in Los Angeles, doubled its seed funding to $5 million, from the initial $2.4 million raised just months after its founding. It is backed by Los Angeles-based Upfront Ventures, Nordic-based Sunstone Capital and Lebanon-based Daher Capital and includes advisers such as Dan Romanelli, the founder and president of Warner Bros. consumer products division who oversaw the creation of properties such as Looney Tunes and Harry Potter.
The games will be free to download with players given the option to pay for in-app purchases to speed up and enhance their playing experience. Mr. J&rvilehto said the company’s initial focus is on reaching as many players as possible rather than making money.
Free-to-play has emerged as the dominant business model in mobile gaming, with Swedish-Anglo maker of such hits as Candy Crush,
PLC, and Finland’s Supercell leading the way. Last year they recorded combined revenue of $2.8 billion.
In addition to the Best Fiends app, Seriously will also launch an animated short, original music, making of videos, artwork, a brand book and stickers for messenger apps, it said. For the music, it has partnered with Despicable Me-composer Heitor Pereira while the short film has been produced by Angry Birds Toons series-producer S&ren Fleng.
